Learn Spanish the natural way

The purpose of learning a language is to understand and be understood, and that’s where we start. I follow a context-based approach to language teaching. My students and I talk about our lives, create stories together, role-play, and learn about the world by discussing articles and videos in the target language. By acquiring language naturally in this way, students are best able to learn and retain vocabulary and grammatical structures.

Make the grade in Spanish class

I am a former high school Spanish teacher with 15 years of experience teaching and tutoring Spanish. I have extensive experience working with students with learning differences such as ADHD, auditory processing disorder, dyslexia and other language based learning disorders. I turn my students into successful independent learners by teaching them study skills and strategies like creating memory devices and grammar checklists.

A bit about me…

Hi! I’m Ellen, a former classroom Spanish teacher and academic coach, now fully dedicated to private tutoring. I taught in classrooms for 8 years before taking time away from my career to raise and teach my own children. Once they were school-aged, I created Spanish That Sticks.

I studied Spanish while living in Spain and Mexico, and I mastered Spanish fluency while teaching English in Ecuador. I earned my Master Degree in Education and am certified to teach Spanish in New Jersey.

I've taught students of all ages and at all levels of Spanish proficiency in large classes, small groups, and one-on-one. I have extensive experience working with students with learning differences such as ADHD, auditory processing disorder, dyslexia and other language based learning disorders. I love teaching language one-on-one because I can create lessons specific to a student's learning style and interests.

Testimonials

I can safely say that my daughter would barely have passed her Spanish class and would have learned very little to take into the next school year had it not been for Ellen’s amazing ability to connect and encourage and inspire and TEACH. My daughter was happy to work with her and felt accountable to complete homework and study activities that Ellen suggested. Ellen communicated with us regularly so we were in the loop about what they were working on. My daughter is heading into Spanish 3 well prepared and so much of that is thanks to Ellen! I highly recommend her as an excellent Spanish tutor.

Ellen is a terrific tutor, and I’m thrilled with the progress we’ve made together. She comes well-prepared to our lessons, seamlessly combines conversation with grammar reviews and offers great homework, including readings and podcasts. She’s a pleasure to work with- both friendly and fun. A great resource!
— Jo-Ann, Morristown, N.J.
Ellen was very patient and knowledgeable. My son is in high school and was struggling with concepts. In every chapter he did not “fully understand” portions of it, and Ellen was great in identifying what he was weak in and working with him to get his concepts stronger. I was very relieved to find Ellen as she had a great rapport with my son and was able to clear many concepts and also make the sessions fun. My son looked forward to every session with her.
